Step One - Aldol Cleavage of Glucose

Aldol cleavage works between the carbon atom adjacent to a carbonyl group and the next carbon atom along, so you would end up with a two carbon fragment and a four carbon fragment. When you cleave your sugar you need equal sized halves.
